Addiction is an adaptation to survive

This is a touchy subject that creates strong reactions. If you think I’m full of shit that’s okay, your truth is your own, all I can do is share my truth at this particular moment in time.

You are always doing the best you can even if it doesn’t look pretty.

I was recently in a group where someone mentioned an addict with disgust and contempt. This attitude is quite common in my experience. I intellectually know it is about them, whether a mirror for themselves, or having been in relationship with an addict, or just general ignorance. Whatever it is it pisses me off, and yes pissing me off is ‘my’ stuff as I was once an addict for many, many years. That also gives me a unique perspective into addiction. Which is the reason for this blog post and at least one more to come. I don’t talk about my experience with addiction much anymore, as telling the story takes me right back there, rekindling those memory pathways of an old story that does not serve me. However my intuition has nudged me, letting me know it was important to tell it today.

Addiction is a disease …. oh bite me. Even if you believe that, it’s a disease that can be cured. Not everyone succeeds, but that is true of a lot of diseases. You are not fated to carry around the “I am an addict banner”, once successfully sober. More on the “successfully sober” bit in later posts.

So how I define addiction: any behaviour that you do repetitively to deflect your attention from your reality and your pain, that negatively affects you and by extension your life. That creates imbalance even if it is a means to an end. Addiction is not in the substance, addiction is in the behaviour.

We are an addictive culture, it is common for people to use addiction as a way to survive the stress of daily life, past trauma (acknowledged or not), fear of the unknown and many other things that make us uncomfortable. What is uncommon is people realizing and/or admitting it, especially before it is affecting their lives in extreme ways.

We learn to adapt to our environment starting from birth, adapting at all costs to survive. We are at the mercy of our caregivers whether they are nice or not and society at large. So we change who we are to fit in, to be loved, to be taken care of, and once we grow up we’ve often forgotten or indeed have no awareness at all of those bit by bit changes we made in order to make ourselves feel safe.

In order to feel safe, self-soothe or escape the pain of our reality, some of us retreat within ourselves, becoming meek and quiet. Others of us fight for ourselves and our childhood is peppered with discord within our relationships, or become people pleasers always helping everyone. Some of us become over-controlling as a way to feel ok, and others becoming mean or a bully to reduce the feeling of helplessness. Some start with addictive behaviours to self-sooth, often with food as the first addiction. Other’s become pompous asses to hide feelings of inadequacy.  No one is better or worse than another, they are all a way to stop the feelings of pain that comes with betraying ourselves (remembered or not), the anger at unjust treatment, lies, deceptions, not being given unconditional love, and for some not even having their daily basic needs met, and having nowhere to go or no-one that believes you or in you. It is a way for some of us to stop wanting to blow our brains out, escape this reality and not feel or hurt again.

…….. So now you’re an adult.

If you are an addict it is okay,
congratulations you found a way to survive,
not everyone does.

I encourage you, to not to go into judgement, shame and blame, or if you do, forgive yourself as often as is necessary and carry on doing the best you can. This blog and the one(s) to come are meant to give you hope that sobriety is possible. If you’re an addict you are on a journey which is giving you skills and abilities that you can cross-train to attain sobriety. If you are not an addict well, here’s a window into the world of a woman who once was.

Shame, blame and judgement are damaging emotions, and counterproductive to sobriety. In fact they kept me locked into addiction like a vice.

A week in the head of the addict I used to be.
An average addictive week starting on a Monday …

– Off to work feeling depressed, overwhelmed, stressed, exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally
– I got high Friday and Saturday night, not Sunday as I had to work today, so that was something
– I vowed to not use again when I woke up on Sunday morning

Now the weekly game is afoot, because the first thing I want to do to not feel my emotional pain, is to use again.
– My infernal internal dialogue is off and running, all day long as usual…..
Judgement, judgement, judgement “How could you use again, why can’t you be stronger, why can’t you just say no, look at the money you spent, see how bad you feel now, but I want to use, you can’t use, I want to use, you can’t use, I know I vowed I wouldn’t but ……. I want to.” Rinse repeat, rinse repeat, rinse repeat.

– I need to escape from myself and my continuous judgement and internal dialogue. I cannot I am trapped in my own head.
– I need to escape the push and pull of wanting to use and saying no, over and over and over again.
– I can’t make my head shut up, my Itty Bitty Shitty Committee is working overtime
– I feel awful, physically, mentally, emotionally I am a basket case
– My neurochemistry is now so low my ability to even fight my desires are at a really low ebb.
– “It’s only Monday you can hang on until Friday Michele, you cannot work hungover you know that, okay, push through it, perhaps by Friday you’ll feel better and not want to use”

But nothing changes, I fight with my overwhelming desire to use all week long.

I have made it to Friday. I have accomplished sobriety for 5 days in a row. Hooray for me. Unfortunately I still want to use, and now I have been doing battle with myself for approx. 130 hrs straight I am exhausted. I don’t have to work tomorrow, I’m sooo tired of the battle, I hate myself, I am disgusted by my inability to not want to use, disgusted by my previous behaviour, what is wrong with me, why can’t I just say no.
I cannot hold the pain and stay present anymore.

– It’s Friday, I’ll just get high tonight, no work tomorrow
– F..k it I’m going to score
– Then I have to go about acquiring it, and seeing as booze isn’t my thing, I can’t just go to the store, so…. (Just imagine the stress of acquiring an illegal substance, that you may or may not even be able to get and now that you’ve said yes to yourself, you are let’s say … very determined. Anxious to be able to get or not get, anxious to not get busted. I was lucky I never got busted, and if you think getting busted would have stopped me from using as soon as I got out back then, you are wrong.)

And so I score and I use again,
– Oh sweet holy h_ll, I feel good and I feel happy for the first time all week.
– No more pain, emotional, physical or mental.
– Zippidy do da zippidy day, my oh my what a wonderful day!
– I am out of my body, out of my head, my internal dialogue is gone. I get to focus on anything other than wanting to use.
– But of course once it’s gone, then begins the slow slide back to the hell of the reality I have created
– I wake up sober in absolute horror over having used yet again and what I did when I used. When we mind alter with anything, it changes how we act and behave.
– My constant companions judgement, shame and blame show up as usual, creating a new layer of emotional pain. Addicts are really really good at beating themselves up, we don’t need any help really, we got this!
– Hungover and now feeling so bad about my behaviours on top of depressed, overwhelmed and stressed …….

– It’s Saturday – using last night has tipped the scales on my ability to fight. I don’t have to work tomorrow.
– I’m going to use ….. I’m done!
– I’ll stop tomorrow, I’ve got work on Monday …….

“Just Say NO!”  ………   What a load of crap!
Now there was a campaign that wiggled its way into the hearts and minds of many.

What a lovely thought ‘Just say No”. Why didn’t I think of that……

All be it perhaps well intentioned, that campaign has done soooo much harm to addicts I can’t even tell you. That ridiculous campaign,  became embedded in the beliefs of  western culture.

Addicts say ‘No’ to themselves all day long, constantly fighting to not cave to their addiction, fighting their overwhelming sense of disgust with themselves, fighting the pain, fighting the judgement, shame and blame they heap on themselves.

I no longer dance with addiction, but admittedly I still on occasion eat too much sugar and indulge in zoning out with movies and tv. The difference is now I have so many years of sobriety and a mountain of healing work behind me. I have the advantage of neurochemistry that is not in the toilet, and the wisdom to know myself well and what strategies I need to implement, so that I do not allow those those behaviours to go unchecked for very long.

I now consider myself healed from addiction, with a predisposition for addictive tendencies. I do not fear falling back into the need to mind alter to get away from the life I have and am creating. I also now know that where my neurochemistry is at, which dramatically changes how I am feeling, and by default how ‘at risk’ I might be to depression. Depression for me was what was underlying my addiction in the past, and is probably underlying almost everybody’s addictive behaviours.

My next post will deal with how I got sober and some sciency stuff, to help explain our neurochemistry a bit more.

Q & A with a hand full of bullshit thrown in for good measure
We only react to things that we have ‘stuff’ with.
So why do you need that glass of wine/joint/codeine/etc. every day?
Imagine that you will never be able to get alcohol/joint/codeine/etc. of any sort again?
How do you feel now?
Is there a wee bit of panic rising, discomfort?

What is that glass of wine/joint/codeine/etc. doing for you? What’s the gain, there’s always a gain?

“Well I only have one glass of wine everyday, I’m not an addict”
“I only drink/toke socially”
“I toke, but doesn’t everyone and it’s legal now, doesn’t make me an addict”
“Exercising 3 hrs every day is good for me, not addiction”
“My doctor prescribed these”
“I only shop all the time to get the deals, and the shipping is free! I’ve got Amazon Prime”
“I’m just having a challenging time right now”
“I’m not an addict, I can stop whenever I want” (This is my favourite piece of bullshit)
“I only get high on the weekends” – This was my bullshit and my control mechanism, most of the time

Blah blah blah …… At a certain point we own our truth and things get better from there

Tarot: 7 ~ The Chariot (aka The Warrior/Jaguar Knight: Mayan Tarot)

HINT ~ This card represents success in self-disciple, self-authority, your mind is in the drivers seat. The subconscious mind reprogrammed by you, rather than being at ‘the effect’ of unconscious childhood programming that was not yours to begin with.  You are an independent being knowing who you are, what your boundaries are, and sticking to them. In relationships you share your energy but are not overshadowed by another(s). This is an activist card, you have been an activist for yourself. You are autonomous, and have seniority within.

CURRENT BLOG THEME
– Tarot a tool to use intuitively, for you to discern what today’s message is. What to pay attention to, due to the energy presented by the card and as a means of self exploration.
I pull a tarot card every day with the intent that the card is for whomever is called to read my blog that day. Due to honouring copyright I will not be posting a photo of the card but instead I will post a photo of something that resonates as a mirror for that card. It is up to you, to interpret what the photo’s message is for you each day.

What intuitive messages are you hearing today?

Two ways you can do with this.
1) Focus on the photo and your breath, if the message comes from your belly it is usually your intuition, if it comes from your mind, well ego is probably present. So focus on your breath and the card, do your best to stay out of your head and see what comes.
2) Look at the photo, really focus on it, burn it into your retinas, especially parts that catch your attention more. Then go about your day with the intent to see and hear messages.
That’s it, see what comes, play have fun, this is not work, no seriousness please. Trust and be gentle with yourself, going through the process even if you don’t feel like you have gotten a message is still a success.

IN DEPTH PROCESS
~ Set your intent to play with this, rather than it being all serious with a pass or fail mentality.  Intuition takes practice.
~ Set your intent to hear the intuitive messages from spirit that you get today from being present with the photo above.
~ Find a quiet place to be present with the photo. (If the kids are running around the room you’re in, forget about it, find another room)
~ Breathe deeply for a few moments, focusing on your breath. This will bring you into a more balanced intuitive state. If your internal dialogue kicks up that’s okay, just notice it and let it pass on through your mind not engaging with it, and focus on your breath again.
~ Notice what attracts you about the photo. As a symbol what does this mean to you and your life walk?
~ Notice any ‘thoughts, images, colours’ that pop up not from your brain, but rather from your gut or elsewhere. (If it’s from your brain that is your ego chatting away, trying to distract you from hearing your intuition.)
~ What do those thoughts, colours, images mean as symbols or otherwise to you specifically and your life?
~ Right them down. Then you have them and can ponder on them any time you want during the day.
~ If nothing comes, do not, I repeat do not beat yourself up, this is playtime remember. Go about your day, something may pop up during the day unexpectedly. If not, no matter, there’s another photo coming tomorrow to play with.  Intuition takes practice.

~ Enjoy the close bond you have with certain very intimate friends.
~ To my warrior sister Sky Raven, I dance with you through the Nagual today.

PROCESS

WHAT IS THIS POST ABOUT – I pull a tarot card every day from the Mayan Xultun Tarot Deck by Peter Balin. Due to honouring copyright I do not post a photo of the card but instead I post a photo of something that resonates as a mirror for that card, from my perspective. It is up to you, to interpret what the photo’s message is for you each day. Play with tarot, see what your intuitive messages are.

Your interpretation and experience is your own. I can only share my personal understanding, I invite you to find your own truths and their relevance in your life. This is really important. If something resonates great, if not chuck it out. We gain nothing by ‘taking on’ others life experiences and beliefs. The juice and healing comes from within your own understanding, it is pivotal for your healing journey and manifesting what you want.

CASTING A SACRED CIRCLE

~ Intent: To create a sacred protected space in which to do ceremonies, rituals, healing

~ Location
Done indoors or outdoors, in a quiet space where you will not be disturbed. Circles can be as big or small as you want, make them to suit your needs.

~ Materials needed
… Wand (Optional) If you do not have a wand you can use both your hands clasped together palms facing inward OR a favourite pointy crystal, beautiful stick, etc. Something that is sacred to you and is pointy.
… Stick incense or smudge in any form
… Lighter
… Compass for cardinal directions
… Any supplies you may need for whatever work you are doing in the sacred circle
… 4 rocks or crystals to hold the energy of each direction… (Ask each one if it is willing to hold that energy)
Optional: the elements either in the centre of the circle or in each appropriate direction in glass or pottery bowls. You can use incense or smudge for air. If using a lit candle, ensure your circle is in a safe area & large enough that it will not be a fire hazard and respect all fire bans in effect. A candle, lit incense, piece of sage still burning can ignite a fire that can burn down an island, have care for that. On Gabriola in the summer, nothing that could start a fire outdoors, none, zilch, nada! It is your intent that is important, your ceremony will still work beautifully using unlit items (candle, incense, smudge).

~ Cleansing
Light the incense/smudge, waft it around yourself, the area, your wand & all items to be used. If it is safe to do so, otherwise use your intent with the item unlit.

~ Banishing
Standing in the centre of the circle hold you wand skyward with both hands. “I banish from this space, all energies & entities not of the light in all space time & dimensions. I say it is so, therefore it is so, I have spoken”. Then visualize a glowing ball of white light growing all around you, & explode it out past the edges of your circle.

~ Casting the Circle
Use a rock or crystal to hold the energy in each of the 4 cardinal directions. Draw a circle in your minds eye, draw a circle with chalk, make a circle with poured salt or a rope tied together, this is a personal choice. Decide what feels right for you. Then one at a time call in each direction as indicated below.

Standing facing the north of your circle on the inside edge. This is in the actual direction in relation to where your are on the earth. So you may need to use a compass. Walk from the North of the circle down to the East.
Facing the east, hold your wand with both hands out in front of you, invoke* the energies of the East.

* Invoking: Take your wand, start walking from the north to the east. Stand facing the east holding your wand with both hands out in front of you, or put your hands together using your fingertips as a wand. Now call in the energies of the east..

Out loud in a voice of power say: “I call in the energies of the east, the energy of fire, the sun, all the stars, illumination and enlightenment, I ask that you come into this east stone and hold a strong space for this …….. (your intent)” Do this in your own words adding anything else that you feel needs to be stated or prayed for.
Continue around the circle until complete
EAST: Fire, the sun, all stars, illumination and enlightenment
SOUTH: Water, sacred plants, trust and innocence
WEST: Earth, all planets, intuition & introspection
NORTH: Air, sacred animals, wisdom & knowledge

Standing in the centre of your circle, hold your wand with both hands skyward. Call in any energies, sacred ancestors of the light & deities of the light that you work with or are part of your spiritual practise. Ask them to be a part of this …….. (your intent) & to hold a space for you during this …….. (your intent)

The circle is cast, you are ready to begin your ceremony, ritual or healing work. Once the circle is cast do not leave it unless finished. If you absolutely need to leave briefly (washroom or item you need), you need to reseal the circle as you exit and re-enter. This can be done energetically with your intent. Visualize the circle being sealed. This is a protected space for you to do your spiritual work in, when you cross the boundary either way in or out, you are breaking the circle.

~ Completion:
Once complete say: “I thank & release all the energies that were present in this ceremony, blessed be, in beauty it is done.”

Clean up your ceremonial space, ensure that there is no opportunity for a fire to start, leave it in a state of beauty.

Ceremonies (unless communal) are private matters.
Keep the power of your experience within you.

Keep inside for 7 days

Then should you choose to share with another
always keep something for yourself

I have let go of the Mayan Daykeepers as a basis for my posts. I pull a major arcana tarot card every day from the Mayan Xultun Tarot Deck by Peter Balin. Due to honouring copyright I will not be posting a photo of the card but instead I will post a photo of something that resonates as a mirror for that card. It is up to you, to interpret what the photo’s message is for you each day.  Let’s play with tarot. See what your intuitive messages are.

Tarot: 3 ~ The Consort/Feminine Power

3 ~ The Consort/Feminine Power is about . . . . .
(Feminine Power regardless of gender, we all have a feminine side)
~ Owning your personal power and welding it wisely
~ Understanding how you are able to influence people
~ Taking authority for your actions, your power, your responsibilities
~ Having transcended paradoxes. You know who you are, the power you are and how you use that power, wishy washy indecision is no longer a part of you.

PROCESS
~ Set your intent to play with this, rather than it being all serious with a pass or fail mentality.  Intuition takes practice.
~ Set your intent to hear the intuitive messages from spirit that you get today from being present with the photo above.
~ Find a quiet place to be present with the photo. (If the kids are running around the room you’re in, forget about it, find another room)
~ Breathe deeply for a few moments, focussing on your breath.

Interconnection of Gardens & Mayan Daykeeper Cheun

Gardens hold the energy of Cheun ~ Cheun’s essence is the imaginative blending when we create alone or together, and the enjoyment that comes from these creations. (Full info at bottom of post)

I have the joy of working in many gardens. Each one different, each an imaginative blending of human creator(s) and plant creators. I know the humans get enjoyment from this. Do the plants? What I do know from working with the plants, is that they let us know in no uncertain terms if they like where they are and who they are sharing a bed with (pun intended), they do get all glowy and happy when I clean them and their environment up. So perhaps they do get enjoyment out of being in the garden they are in. Here is a part of one of the most beautiful gardens I work in. What an abundance of beauty, I am grateful.

Of all the seasons spring brings our attention to the plant world the most, from my perspective. So for this 20 day cycle I’m going to find a plant, tree, herb, etc that illuminates or holds the energy of the daily Daykeeper. Let’s explore together.

Mayan Daykeeper Imix  brought us back to the beginning of a new cycle of 20 days at the end of which is …… SPRING the season of new growth. We are a part of nature and nature has the ability to transform and grow with incredible speed in Spring. With that in mind we’re playing with the Mayan Daykeepers in this 20 day cycle to begin our own journey into Spring, fresh and rejuvenated, rearing to go.

Playing with Being Present ~ Eyes

Today’s Mayan Daykeeper is Cheun ~ Cheun’s essence is the imaginative blending when we create alone or together, and the enjoyment that comes from these creations. (Full info at bottom of post)

Day 11 of  Playing with Being Present: Today’s focus for being present is your EYES
Spring gardening has resulted in getting flying dirt in my eyes a number of times this season already. After the swearing and moaning, it really puts into perspective (pun intended) how precious they are to me. Now looking outside at I’m not sure how many cm’s of snow ….. well what a treat for the eyes. I invite you to play with being present in a space with your eyes closed, just listen, smell, feel. Then experience the space in the same way but with your eyes open.

Here are some questions to ponder after you’ve done playing with the theme for the day.
~ Does it differ from your usual experience?
~ Have you had a new awareness from this experience?
~ Do you want to play with this again, or did it suck?
~ Was there any value in this experience? What ….
~ Are you beating yourself up for not playing well? Be present with that, and see if you want to repeat the flogging, or might you find that being present with a wee bit of compassion for yourself feels good?

Play, play, play. This is not a test, not supposed to be hard. If it’s not fun don’t do it now, try playing again later.

In this 20 day cycle you are invited to play with being present. Being in the present moment really means we are being conscious. Not in the past and not in the future. When we are in the present all the kvetching we do is not there. What you may notice is that kvetching/internal dialogue is about the past or the future.  Every day will bring a new theme with which to play. An invitation to experience being present for as short or as long as you like. This is not a test, perfection is an illusion and not the natural law. Natural law is imperfection, if you doubt this, I invite you to go into nature and find one perfect thing. There is perfection in imperfection. No matter what we play, sports, games or anything else, with repetition comes learning and improvement. So be gentle with yourself, this is not work, it is play. Have fun experiencing …….

Dreaming for Balance: Superiority

Day 11 of  Dreaming for Balance: Today’s theme is SUPERIORITY
The word dreaming refers to our sleeping dreams and the awake dreamtime, our life when our physical bodies are awake. We are the creators of both.

Today’s Mayan Daykeeper is Cheun ~ Cheun’s essence is the imaginative blending when we create alone or together, and the enjoyment that comes from these creations. (Full info at bottom of post)

In this 20 day cycle you are invited to use Trance Dreams/Day-dreams which occur through intent or sometimes spontaneously through meditation as a discovery tool. Every day You are invited to play with the theme presented. You may choose to intend on having a new awareness around this theme that day and just allow your subconscious mind to present you with an awareness during the day, or you may choose to do a meditation on the theme and see what comes. You may choose to do nothing and that’s okay too. Whatever you choose, I invite you to not make this ‘work’ but rather something to play with, something to explore. What you do with your findings? …… Well you decide the answer to that one.

The daily themes may be used to illuminate different aspects of your ego; the places where your masked ego is ‘on point’ and the places where your ego has become the transcended ego. Uncovering the masks that you took on to survive, and the places where you have taken off your mask and discovered the beauty of impermanence.

Impermanence is the nature of reality. Everything is impermanent, plants, animals, rocks, our bodies, Grandmother Earth, stars, our moods, and yes even our ego. Living in Impermanence is the state of being that is called the transcended ego. As you heal and change, integrating impermanence into your life, you gain freedom. Living from a place of impermanence, you are no longer at the Effect of Life and Others. You stand in the moment and take action, flexible and in control of your choices.

In everything there are positive and negative energies. The masked and transcended ego are just the ying and yang of that particular energy we call the ego. Neither is right or wrong, they are both just states of being where you can understand and learn more about yourself. With that understanding you are at choice, what action you take is up to you.

There are many types of dreams for various reasons. Some of which are Recapitulation Dreams which provide information for us to problem solve issues and questions about our daily lives. Prophetic dreams which give us information about the future. Trance Dreams/Day-dreams which occur through intent or sometimes spontaneously through meditation. Epic Dreams that show us other worlds, some are life changing and some magickal. The ultimate dream goal, is the Power Dream, where we have gained enough knowledge and ability to control our sleeping dream in order to manifest what we will in both the sleeping and awake dreams.

Dreaming Day 11 with Daykeeper Cheun

Tonight’s dream intent will be working with Cheun ~ Cheun’s essence is the imaginative blending when we create alone or together, and the enjoyment that comes from these creations.

Your dream intent is something that is relevant to your life that you wish an answer for.
For example with Cheun: “My dream intent is to see a co-creation that would feed me emotionally, spiritually and financially”
There is information on the process starting at the asterisks *** below.

Dreaming is one of the ways we get information and messages that we can use to manifest our realities in this lifetime. The word dreaming refers to our sleeping dreams and the awake dreamtime, our life when our physical bodies are awake. We are the creators of both.
~ What did you dream about last night?
~ Did you remember your dream?
~ Did you glean anything from your dream?
~ Did you forgive yourself if you didn’t remember your dream?
Please feel free to share in the comments section.

In our current 20 day cycle you are invited to explore and start to train your ability of dreaming. Each evening before you fall asleep set an intent based on the essence of the Daykeeper present that day, each morning you will interpret your dream for a message.  There may be many messages in a dream, however let’s do baby steps. The most important thing to remember is NO-ONE can interpret your dream for you. I don’t care how many books or people say otherwise and here’s why. Dreams teach you through symbolism, your symbolism. If you see a horse in your dream, what does the symbol of a horse represent to you? A horse will represent many different things as a symbol to different people. So if someone else interprets your dream, you are getting their interpretation of the symbols in your dream from their perspective not yours. I don’t know about you, but I find no relevance in that.

Your dream creation, Your symbols, Your interpretation, affecting Your life.

dream, dreaming, dream intention, mayan, daykeeper, Cheun, creativity, art, joy, interplay, craftspeople, delight, union, stars, stardust, Pixabay.com, HEALINGthroughCEREMONY.com, Michele Fire-River Heart

Here are some steps that may help, use what you wish or don’t use any, it’s up to you. Most importantly if you do not remember a dream that’s perfectly okay, there are days we remember and days we don’t. Be gentle with yourselves this is not a test, it’s an exploration. Exploring doesn’t always result in finding the pot of gold, sometimes the end of that darn rainbow is just elusive and that’s the way it goes. Have fun.

*** DREAM INTERPRETATION PROCESS
Before you go to sleep
~ Put a pen and paper next to your bed for easy access
~ Set an intent based on the current Daykeeper. Something that is relevant to your life that you wish an answer for.
~ Write it down on you paper
~ Say it out loud just before you fall asleep

In the morning or any time you wake during the night. As you are waking up, in that time when you are aware of the dream and waking up
~ Intentionally remember as much of the dream as you can
~ Write down as much as you can using double line spacing, including how you felt/feel, emotions, colours, smells, etc. Write it as it comes, do not go into your head analyzing if it makes sense or is coherent, just write
~ Using your extra line spacing to write in, write down your interpretation of what each word means to you symbolically
~ When complete look for meaning, a message within your interpreted writing. Just one, finding all the messages and meanings can be overwhelming to start. If nothing makes sense, see if a certain word, symbol, feeling, emotion, smell or colour that jumps out and go from there. There is no right or wrong here, if you feel it’s relevant then it is. If nothing comes don’t stress or beat yourself up, just leave it for now and go about your day.
~ Ask for more of the dream or meaning be revealed to you during your day.

Other questions that may help:
~ What was my intent?
~ What is the feeling of the dream?
~ What is the general energy of the dream?
~ What was the most important object in the dream?
~ How does this dream relate to my intent?
~ Is there a symbol that sticks out from the rest? What does it represent to me in relation to my intent?

There are many types of dreams for various reasons. Some of which are Recapitulation Dreams which provide information for us to problem solve issues and questions about our daily lives. Prophetic dreams which give us information about the future. Trance Dreams/Day-dreams which occur through intent or sometimes spontaneously through meditation. Epic Dreams that show us other worlds, some are life changing and some magickal. The ultimate dream goal, is the Power Dream, where we have gained enough knowledge and ability to control our sleeping dream in order to manifest what we will in both the sleeping and awake dreams.
