When I was growing up there was this lovely cartoon series created by New Zealand cartoonist Kim Casali. (Loveiscartoon.com) I remember waiting for the newspaper to see what the cartoon was that day. It is one of the few things that stuck in my memory about that time in my life. So I’m taking a leaf out of her book, sans cartoons to illuminate my thoughts about love in the upcoming blog posts. Some you may agree with some you may not, it is just my opinion, you have your own and that’s as it should be.

Parents: Love is …
~ Reading a bedtime story
~ Forgiveness
~ Getting the perfect gift, because they ‘get you’
~ Nursing you when you’re ill
~ Taking care of you when they’re ill
~ Always having your back
~ Celebrating your victories
~ Holding space for you when you’ve made a mistake
~ Teaching you everything from talking to world affairs
~ A stroke on the cheek
~ Brushing your hair gently
~ Cleaning up after you when you’re little
~ Providing for you
~ Hugs & kisses
~ Holding space for you when your heart is broken
~ Cooking, cleaning, bathing, shopping, etc.
~ Supporting you no matter what
~ Not validating bad behaviour
~ Setting healthy boundaries
~ Having healthy boundaries of their own
~ Not being a crutch for you when you’re an adult
~ Letting you go, so you can live your own life
~ Not putting their needs onto you
~ Encouraging your sense of individuality
~ Not offering advice if it is not requested even if they’re dying to give it (Age appropriate)
~ Giving you the opportunity to make your own choices and mistakes
~ Admitting their mistakes
~ Saying sorry and changing their own bad behaviours
~ Treating children as little people not chattel
~ Including you in family decision making (Age appropriate)
~ Encouraging you to voice your own opinions
~ Letting you learn from natural consequences (Situation dependent)

Well clearly I could go on and on, parenting is big. So too is their influence in our lives. They induce love & hate in us. Almost every parent has heard “I hate you!” at some point. The bottom line is no matter what, the ties that bind us to our parents are strong, and usually filled with love. As adults we have the opportunity to see them as people, just fallible people doing the best they can at the hardest job in the world, with the least amount of education. They make mistakes just like we do, it is up to us to find the gifts and lessons even in those mistakes, and get to the place of being able to see the love. Life is short, forgiveness is for us.
